Self-Development for Genuine Leadership

What is it?

Developed leaders can:

communicate, inspire, bring the team together, have difficult conversations, steer the ship and easily switch focus between details and the big picture.

And you don’t have to be an extravert or charismatic to do this – but you do have to be genuine and intentionally cultivate certain skills.

So, why focus on self-development?

I have found that the quality of leadership starts and ends with you and your attunement to yourself and others. If that is difficult for you, then that might have been hard to read and I understand. You already have a lot to deal with! But this kind of deep work tends to create real, lasting change. Not just in your team or company today, but in how you lead in the future too. So the time and effort is very well-spent, if occasionally uncomfortable. But then – most real growth is.

Can I work on specific issues I’m having?

Yes, and always! Challenges are a huge opportunity for growth, and a chance to develop and flex new leadership muscles. And sometimes things may feel a little too trivial, or too unrelated to bring to coaching, but everything can be relevant. This is because if it pertains to you, it may very well pertain to your leadership style too.

I’m new to leadership, can coaching help?

It absolutely can. As a new leader you are at an exciting time in your life! And potentially sometimes a little daunting too. Questions like – will people listen to me, will they follow me, will I do it right, or even – do I deserve to lead? and more, come up naturally.

The right leadership coach can help you discover your own genuine leadership style and support you when you come up against challenges and opportunities for growth.

Does leadership really have to change with the times?

Yes, along with almost everything else. For example, a lot of people rigidly compartmentalize as a way to deal with their stress. They are one person at work and an entirely different person at home. But the world is changing fast and increasingly leaders are expected to be emotionally intelligent as well as analytically intelligent, so compartmentalizing (and other more rigid or authority-driven approaches) rarely work today (aside from the military and other specific sectors).

Younger generations are not just looking for a salary, they are also looking for meaning and connection. And it’s not just the younger people – recent events mean that a lot of us are looking to make a difference or a genuine connection with other people.

Many people are looking for something real right now.

So, as leaders we have to be real too.

Change can be scary – especially if you used to get great results and now you are being told it’s no good any more, that people need to be treated differently, that team cultures need to be more evolved.

I completely understand. Change means moving into the unknown and uncertainty. It’s hard to choose to feel those things, instead of the solidity of what we know. It takes a lot of courage, and support can help too.

How important is it that I work on my self-development as a leader?

The more responsibility we take on and the more people we lead, the more our strengths and limitations are magnified. That is why they say your team is a reflection of you. That’s quite a responsibility!

On the plus side, doing this work is not only great for your leadership style – it is great for you. Working on our limitations, insecurities and blindspots can improve communication and connection in our personal lives greatly. This can yield huge payoffs in terms of our relationships and our satisfaction in life.

How can coaching help?

The beauty of leadership coaching is that while leadership is hard, you don’t need to do it alone.

Together we will explore the challenges you’re facing and ways for you to learn and grow through them. We’ll look at assumptions you have about leadership, ways you’d like to improve, issues of team engagement and culture and more.

How does coaching with you work?

To start with we would do a free 20 minute initial consultation, to discuss whether coaching with me is the right thing for you. If we both agree, I’ll send you the intake form and we’ll schedule your first session.

My sessions are 50 minutes and online, mainly through zoom. For the strongest impact I suggest you sign up for a course of 6 sessions, either weekly or every two weeks. However, I do make exceptions to allow lower income clients to access single sessions as and when needed.
